Yahoo! Women Who Shine Meet Lavada My @YahooShine #WomenWhoShine

"What are YOU waiting for?"  Those are the words that come to mind when I think of my Yahoo! Women Who Shine, Lavada Anderson, Lavada embodies every thing there is about women who shine.  She's a wife, mother, grandmother, hard worker and believes in the power of mind, body and spirit.  Lavada recognized the power of an email long before most and would send a flood of emails on a variety of topics.  Unlike friends who would send funny, snarky or waste of time emails, Lavada shared information.  Yet, it wasn’t until I wrote this blog post that I realized how the information she was sharing was shaping the women she was becoming.

When Lavada returned to school she shared tips on financial aid, scholarships, and other pertinent college information.  Soon, other women in our circle started returning to school.  We started encouraging each other to stay in school and suddenly College Algebra didn't seem as difficult.  We started sharing tips with others in our circles and as time went by I realized while others were busy planning how to do something, Lavada seemed to be doing it.  When folks were talking about starting an exercise program Lavada had already pooled co-workers and friends and started a walking club.  She changed her eating habits, began sharing healthy recipes and began encouraging others to make healthy lifestyle changes.  Little did she know she was the ripple of change some of us needed.

Many of us dream of owning our own business, but Lavada did.  She's not a millionaire by a long shot but she is evidence of the power of faith.  I remember one day she asked me some insight on possible businesses.  She’ll laugh when I tell her I remember the concierge business.  “What a novel idea”, I thought.  I don’t know if she ever went through with that one BUT it wasn’t long before she started selling purses and accessories and My3 Angels Fashions and Accessories was born.  

Her business name pays homage to her adorable granddaughters pictured below. 

 

I'm sure Lavada doesn't realize how much of an inspiration she is to me and so many others.  She is a testament to the power of hard work and a little faith.  I don't know what lit her fire and made her get up and live this thing called life, but I am thankful for the opportunity to share space on Earth with such a positive, reckoning force.  Lavada truly embraces what it's like to be whole in mind, body and spirit.

Coffee-Glazed Nuts Recipe

Fall is here and I recently came across this recipe for Coffee-glazed Nuts.  I can't wait to try this recipe.  Have you ever tried this one or a similar-type recipe? 

Coffee-Glazed Nuts

Walnuts, pecans and almonds combine in this tasty twist on the classic nut mix. With a sweet and savory coffee glaze, these Coffee-Glazed Nuts are sure to create a buzz!

Prep time: 10 min
Cook time: 17 min
Yields: 3 cups

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons hot water
• 1 1/2 teaspoons NESCAFÉ CLÁSICO Pure Instant Coffee Granules or NESCAFÉ TASTER'S CHOICE House Blend 100% Pure Instant Coffee Granules
• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1 tablespoon honey or light corn syrup
• 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
• 3 cups whole mixed nuts (such as walnuts, pecans and unsalted almonds)

Instructions

1. PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Line baking sheet with foil.
2. COMBINE water and coffee granules in medium saucepan; stir until dissolved. Stir in sugar, honey and salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; stir in nuts until completely coated. Spread in single layer over prepared baking sheet.
3. BAKE for 5 minutes; stir. Bake for an additional 10 minutes, stirring halfway through bake time. Cool completely on baking sheet. Break into pieces; store in an airtight container. Can be made up to one week in advance

These Ariat Women's Heritage Western R Toe Boot - Red Deertan seemed to be a favorite among my fellow bloggers at the AWBC.  I think four or five of us settled on this style.   I don't know much about boots but Ariat is a name I recognize from when I was a kid living in Texas.  The stitching detail is beautiful and Western look is perfect for pairing with your fave denims.  I wish you could have been there to see our faces as we walked into a room to meet our boots.  Oh the sweet smell of new leather, nothing like it.  Everyone was so giddy and excited.  As much as I wanted to wear mine, I didn't.  *sigh* For some reason, I wore capris to dinner that night and the budding fashionista in me wasn't too keen on the whole boots and capris look.  *smile* 
 
Here's a shot of my new boots.  Yes, I love them and yes I have worn them several times since receiving them.  They're so comfy and so stylish and genuine leather boots only get better with time so I know they'll look great for a long, long time.

Zestra Review

It's no secret that as we age, our bodies change.  Subtle changes we may not feel comfortable discussing at Mom's Day Out or when we're out hanging with our friends.  I wanted to test my theory so I sparked up a conversation during a recent Girls' Night Out  about *ahem* lubricants.  I had just received samples of Zestra products and thought well, we talk about everything else so why not.  After we laughed about it for a moment, the convo got real serious and I discovered women, or at least those in my circle, already knew of the product.  Turns out Kris Jenner, mom of those Kardashian girls, is a spokesperson for the product and a few of them have seen ads for Zestra, wanted to try it, but for whatever reason they just didn't.  


I'd never heard of Zestra.  Never seen any of the commercials and was surprised so many of my friends knew of it and hadn't mentioned it before.  Some friends huh?  Here I am thinking I'm sharing this fab new product when I'm actually the last to know.  So what did this fab mommy think of Zestra you ask.  Well, let me start by saying I worry about irritation when it comes to products like lubricants and knowing Zestra is made with botanical oils was a relief.  Not to get all technical but ladies if you've ever had your pH balance off then you can appreciate my hesitation.  I'm glad to report no irritation and the sensation was noticeable.  Tingly.  


     What I Liked                           

     +  Hypo allergenic.  HUGE plus in my book
     +  All natural.  No worries in case Zestra is accidentally ingested

     +  Convenience.  Portable and compact
     +  Easy application.  The applicator assures just the right amount
     +  Sensation.  SensationAL!


     What I Didn't Like as Much
     -  Scent. Kinda sandalwood-ish
     -  Cost.  Zestra is a bit pricy compared to similar products

My Thoughts:  I received the Fire Roasted Tomato and Creamy Portabella Mushroom varieties for review.  I used the Fire Roasted Tomato to make the "best pasta and sauce in the world" or so according to the youngest of Los Tres Amigos.  I got a little  adventurous and used the Creamy Portabella Mushroom to make the Easy Weeknight Beef Stroganoff.  Very easy and reminded me of the beef stroganoff my mom used to make when I was a kid.   Delicious!!!

Mia Mariu Makeup Review

Mía is a Dallas based health and beauty social selling company that offers entrepreneurial business opportunities for women. Their natural health and beauty products are available exclusively through our Independent Advisers and online. 

I'm somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to makeup.  I enjoy healthy looking skin and mineral based makeups are becoming one of my favorites.  In fact, most of my makeup is mineral based and has been for quite a few years now.  I've noticed less irritation and blemishes since I began using mineral based makeup.  Mía Mariu offers a nice variety of products.  There aren't a hundred shades to choose from so you're not overwhelmed and although that's a huge plus for some, others may find the products offerings somewhat limited.

I received a few of their products for review and was pleased with Mía Mariu. 

Anti-aging Eye Treatment:  I am beginning to notice those fine, little lines we always hear about, around my eyes.  Not that I have crow's feet or anything, but I have been purchasing more eye moisturizers the last couple of years.  A small dab is all it takes to make those fine lines less noticeable.  I've tried a couple of eye moisturizers which left my skin feeling tout/tight, not so with Mía Mariu.  Unlike some other eye moisturizers the Mía Mariu did not leave my eyes looking oily.  I've used a couple of other eye moisturizers and each application made me look as if I smeared a dollop of Vaseline across my eyes.  Not so with Mía Mariu.  Very light.

Hydrating Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 30+: Every good moisturizer deserves a 30+ or higher sunscreen.  Mía Mariu Hydrating Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 30+ was a little watery for my taste but the smell was absolutely indulgent.  No froo-froo fruity smell here.  The scent was light and refreshing and the texture was more akin to a sunscreen lotion as opposed to a moisturizer.  I really appreciate the high SPF, that's something we're seeing more and more in moisturizers and for those of us who are always out and about in the sun, having multi-purpose products like these which moisturizer and protect are a beauty must have.

Luminous Lip Gloss:  I'm a lip gloss, lovin' mama so I was most excited about reviewing the Mía Mariu Luminous Lip Gloss.  The gloss did not disappoint and has earned a spot on my Beauty Must Have list for 2012.  Perfect tint, perfect shine and the perfect amount of moisturizer.   The creamy texture made for easy application and the color lasts without having to reapply again and again.  The color selections are few but for me that's a plus.  It's gloss, not lipstick.  If you want color, buy a lipstick.  If it's shine you desire, you are in for a treat and priced at only $13, it's a steal.

Overall, I was very pleased with the products I reviewed.  However, it's the company's dedication to promoting entrepreneurship which proved to be the biggest selling point for me.  Great products and the opportunity to start your own business are always a win-win in my book.

Enjoy Little Rock’s newest theatre with opening events benefiting local charities

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Media and all Little Rock-area residents are invited to celebrate the Grand Opening of Regal Cinemas at McCain Mall during a three-day array of entertaining preview events from Monday, September 17 through Wednesday, September 19.  Moviegoers can enjoy $2 movies, $2 popcorn, and $2 soft drinks at all events, with proceeds benefiting local charities. 

During the three-day opening, guests can sit back and relax behind the big screen in one of the 12 theaters offered at their community’s new entertainment destination.  Each preview event will feature a varied list of fabulous movies, starting with the “Read It and See It at Regal” event on September 17, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters.  On September 18, guests are encouraged to attend “Regal Is All-American,” which profits the September Fund and St. Jude.  Tying up the Grand Opening of Regal Cinemas, filmgoers are invited to “Regal Family Fun Day” on September 19, whose proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

My Thoughts:  Easy to read and comprehend and perfect for elementary, tweens and teens.  I wish my parents had taught my siblings and I to be more money smart when we were younger.  However, look around and it's easy to see many of us were not taught how to be wise with our money.  Kids seem to have a sense of entitlement rather than an understanding of money.  I hope to instill an appreciation for the rewards of hard work and saving to our children and the tips in this book offer a wonderful foundation for such.  

Although the economy has changed a lot since authors Steve and Annette Economides started their family's path to savings, the ideas are truly commendable and can be applied to today's ever changing family.

11 Academy Awards®, TITANIC, makes its highly anticipated debut on Blu-ray 2D and 3D on September 10, 2012 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.  Available in high definition for the first time ever, James Cameron’s timeless and unforgettable tour de force will be presented in stunning 2D and 3D, providing a cinematic in-home experience of TITANIC like never before.

Presented in a four-disc 2D Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with Digital Copy or, for the ultimate experience in fully immersive 3D, in a four-disc Blu-ray 3D and 2D combo pack with Digital Copy, this high-definition presentation of TITANIC is a must have for film fans’ home media collections.  Both sets feature more than 2 ½ hours of new bonus footage never-before-released on disc, including a fascinating in-depth exploration of the film with James Cameron, as well as documentary footage produced by National Geographic with James Cameron that brings the world’s leading RMS Titanic experts together to solve the lingering mysteries of why and how the “unsinkable” ship sank.
The sets also boast additional special features including 30 deleted scenes, over 60 behind-the-scenes featurettes, a look at the groundbreaking visual effects, over 2,000 photos, three commentaries and much, much more.  TITANIC will also be available in a two-disc DVD set with deleted scenes and, for the first time ever, for digital download.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the roles that would make them global stars, TITANIC tells the story of the epic romance between two star-crossed lovers set against the backdrop of the legendary and ill-fated maiden voyage of the “ship of dreams.”

The discs include the following: Disc 1 (Blu-ray): Feature film in high definition, Commentary by director James Cameron, Cast and Crew Commentary, and Historical Commentary by Don Lynch and Ken Marschall. Disc 2 Features film in standard definition (Part 1), Disc 3 Feature film in standard definition (Part 2). Disc 4, a Blu-ray, has some great features for big fans of Titantic.  This includes a short clip called “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron—NEW! Deleted Scenes with commentary by James Cameron,  Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes,  Construction Timelapse, A Deep Dive Presentation which is narrated by James Cameron, $200,000,001: A Ship’s Odyssey—the Titanic Crew Video, and Videomatics. Additional features include Visual Effects, Music Video—“My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, Trailers, TV Spots, Still Galleries, and, what is the most amusing feature, Titanic Parodies (including clips and skits from MTV’s 1998 Movie Awards skit, Saturday Night Live skit, and  Titanic in 30 Seconds).

My Thoughts:  This movie is one of my favorites and I am excited to add it to our DVD / Blu-ray collection.  Los Tres Amigos and I recently watched a special on NatGeo of James Cameron's excursions to the deepest depths of the ocean and the inclusion of some of that documentary on this anniversary edtion DVD / Blu-Ray were the icing on the cake.  Titanic is one of those films which calls out to romantics, movie lovers and history buffs.  There's something about this epic tale for everyone.
